West Ham target signing Thilo Kehrer from PSG to ease defensive issues | West Ham United
West Ham are confident of bolstering their defensive options by agreeing a deal for Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Thilo Kehrer and are also considering a move for Chelsea left-back Emerson Palmieri.
David Moyes has been forced to seek reinforcements in defense due to an injury crisis which has left him with Kurt Zouma as the only available centre-back. With Nayef Aguerd ruled out after ankle surgery, Craig Dawson struggling with a hamstring injury and Angelo Ogbonna still recovering from a long-term knee injury, West Ham were forced to pair Zouma with the full-back 22-year-old fullback Ben Johnson in their first two games this season.
Zouma’s partnership with Johnson was unconvincing, with West Ham falling to Manchester City and Nottingham Forest and Moyes setting his sights on Kehrer. The 25-year-old German is in the final year of his contract at PSG and can play in central defense and right-back. PSG are believed to want a fee in the region of £16million.
West Ham’s negotiations with the French champions have been positive and they will be hoping to beat competition from Sevilla. Moyes, who brought France centre-back Issa Diop to Fulham last week, will want to complete the signing in time for the Germany international to be available for the home game against Brighton on Sunday.
West Ham’s poor start to the new campaign has increased the pressure on them to increase the size of their small squad. Moyes wants a left-back to rival Aaron Cresswell and is interested in Emerson, who is up for sale at Chelsea.
Emerson, who has attracted interest from Atalanta and Forest, has seen his way to the starting XI blocked by Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella. The Italy international spent last season on loan at Lyon.
Chelsea have made it clear they don’t want Emerson, who joined them from Roma in 2018, to go back on loan. The club’s new owners are keen to introduce transfer fees and remove unwanted players from their books after spending a lot of money on new signings.
West Ham are also looking for a central midfielder and striker. They had a rejected offer for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes turned down last week and are interested in Barcelona forward Memphis Depay, but he is expected to join Juventus.
