FC St. Pauli brings Johannes Eggestein back to Germany

After two years abroad, Johannes Eggestein is back in German football.

SV Werder Bremen Academy player Johannes Eggestein will return to German football next season after spending two years in Austria and Belgium respectively. The younger brother of SC Freiburg midfielder Maximilian Eggestein was signed by second division club 1. FC St. Pauli on Tuesday evening.

Eggestein, now 24, has made no secret of the fact that he resents the way his youth academy club essentially chose to drop him last autumn. The former German youth international’s move to Royal Antwerp FC was not successful as he failed to score a goal in 22 competitive appearances.

Eggestein enjoyed some success in the 2020/21 campaign while on loan at LASK Linz in the Austrian Bundesliga. There, the striker collected 20 points in all competitions. At present, his estimated market value has dropped to an all-time low of €1.4 million.

Kiezkicker head coach Timo Schultz hailed the signing, also praising Eggestein’s two Europa League goals at Linz. For the St. Pauli gaffer, that counted as “solid international experience.”

“I’m happy to be back in northern Germany,” the Hannover native said himself, “Discussions with St. Pauli officials and the [club’s] sporty concept convinced me quickly.”
