Distressed kite-surfer uses smartwatch to save himself

A struggling kite-surfer near a beauty spot in Wirral used his smartwatch to alert the coast guard.

West Kirby RNLI was alerted at around 4:26 p.m. today (Sunday, January 9) after a kite-surfer used his smartwatch to call them.

The man’s kite had become submerged and he was getting tired and cold in the tide near Cubbins Green.

The volunteer crew reached the victim within minutes and were able to retrieve him and his equipment immediately. He was transferred to shore and placed in the care of the local HM Coast Guard team on standby.

West Kirby RNLI Deputy Launch Authority Andy Brown said: “The experienced and well-equipped kite-surfer made the right decision in contacting the Coast Guard once he realized he was in. difficulty.
