DeKalb Park District to host annual Kite Fest – Northern Star
FromKALB – The DeKalb Park District is hosting its annual Kite Fest this month, which will feature outdoor activities for attendees to take part in.
The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on September 11 at Kiwanis Park, on Fairview Drive and S. 4th Street. The festival will be free.
DeKalb’s Kite Fest is known for its great view of kites of all kinds. From kite fights to inflatable kites; the event has it all. Participants are welcome and encouraged to bring and fly their own kites, but if they cannot, kites will be available for purchase on site while supplies last.
Kite pilots will also be present at the event, showing off their skills by performing amazing flight displays. Performers include Team Sky FX, Team Chicago Kite, Al Sparling, Darryl Waters and Anthony Catalano. Chrissy Tluczek, the event manager, said she considers kite pilots a staple at Kite Fest.
“We really consider Chicago Kites to be one of the main people we associate with,” Tluczek said. “They put on a fantastic show in addition to a few other talented people.”
The iconic candy drop from previous years is expected to take place weather permitting and plenty of food trucks will be on hand to feed attendees. Trucks that will be at the event include new and old Kite Fest vendors in the past like Sweet Butts Cotton Candy, The Cream King, Big D’s and Kona Ice.
The kite festival will also feature fun side activities such as a kite-themed craft table, cornhole, paper plane obstacle course, and giant bubbles.
Kite Fest is always looking for volunteers to help with these activities; anyone interested in helping out can contact Chrissy Tluczek, the DeKalb Park District Recreation Supervisor at [email protected].
This year’s festival seeks to keep the same vibe that Kite Fest has had in the past.
“The general atmosphere is the tradition of this whimsical, exciting and beautiful display of kites in the sky,” Tluczek said.
