Come Fly With Me – Door County Pulse
Sister Bay Hosts Inaugural Kite Event
Sister Bay is hosting its first kite day at the Town Sports Complex, 2155 Autumn Court, on July 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., weather and wind conditions permitting. Community coordinator Louise Howson dreamed up the idea as a way to shake up the children’s activities Sister Bay has organized in the past.
After working with a few local Wisconsin Kiters Club flyers, Marketing and Events Manager Ellie Soderberg-Guger said the free event will provide people with an opportunity to participate or watch. The kite kits – 100 of which will be available on a first-come, first-served basis – will allow children to build their own kite.
“They can put [on] any design or color as they wish,” Soderberg-Guger said. “If the kids want to fly them – the ones they just made – they can fly the ones that are adjacent to where the big kites are flying.”
The big kites she was referring to, flown by local airmen, are up to 30 feet long. Some of the local participants, like Jess Kuhns, fly kites all over the state and even beyond, Soderberg-Guger said.
“Aviators – they’re all excited to get to northern Door County and fly kites,” she said.
People who don’t want to make a kite can still watch the airmen fill the sky with their kites while enjoying some refreshments. And for kite enthusiasts who want to add something new to their collection, there will also be kites for sale.
