2. Choose sustainable and local materials
When planning your design, choose flooring that is low maintenance, durable and weather resistant. Go for cane, wicker, and similar materials that don’t have a high carbon footprint.
“We used Indian Shahabad stone, an extremely cost-effective robust stone, as one of the main design elements. It also adds a layer of sturdiness and longevity. To make the built-in seat, we used white terrazzo with chips of Indian white marble. A richly designed sink niche and recycling jhoola add subtle glamour,” says Tejesh.

3. Connect with nature
Give your patio the feel of a green sanctuary and embrace the beauty and intricacies of nature. A birdhouse, water feature, or window boxes where dramatic foliage takes over manicured hedges will do the trick. The miniature urban oasis shown here is home to nearby birdlife, which flies to find water and shade. One can spot kingfishers, kites, sunbirds, bulbuls and more in this bio-diverse urban nest. The terrace also offers the best views of migrating wetland birds like black cormorants that fly in flocks every night.
According to Gauri, the terrace is a landscape of transformations, constantly adapting and pleasantly surprising visitors every day, every week and every season. It was a collaborative journey to weave this urban nest together with their client, where they created an example of how humans and nature can coexist amicably, even in an urban setting.
Overall, the vibe of this Mumbai terrace was defined as a very bohemian space that could transition from a contemplative individualistic space to an outdoor party space. An impressive project executed on a tight budget, without high-end materials or finishes.
